Hawaii Weather Print E-mail

Weather here on the Big Island of Hawaii varies dramatically from one part of the island to another. The Kona side (west side) is consistently warm and dry, with daytime temperatures in the 80's. This is the primary destination for visitors to the island, because of the consistently sunny weather.

The Hilo side (east side) has much more rainfall, producing the lush vegetation and beautiful waterfalls that it is famous for. The east side is also warm, with average temperatures only slightly cooler than Kona side, due to the rainfall and cloud cover. Rainfall is a maximum near the Hilo area, and decreases with increasing distance from Hilo.

The towns with the coolest temperatures on the island are Waimea, near the north end of the island, and Volcano. This is primarily due to their increased elevation relative to other areas on the island.

On the Hamakua Coast, where I live, the weather is beautiful. 'Hamakua' means 'breath of God', and refers to the consistent breezes the area receives from the easterly trade winds. The weather is mostly sunny with evening or nighttime showers. It is my favorite area of the island, and is growing quickly.

No matter what you are looking for, Hawaii's Big Island has something for everyone!
